Queretaro [5] is another lovely highland (1800 m) colonial town with many winding stone paved and pedestrianized streets. We took plenty of pictures last time in 2011. They are here.
The light was perfect for church tower shots.
Tequisquiapan [6] screams “Mexico” – intense light, bright colors and rambling bougainvilleas in full flower. It’s a popular Pueblo Magico weekend getaway for Mexicans. In the 1970s Spanish Cava producer Freixenet established vineyards nearby to produce quality reds, whites and sparklings – all available in the Freixenet Wine Bar in the center of the pueblo. This is the start of the Cheese and Wine Route in Central Mexico. We took an 8 hour tour, but came back completely sober!
At the other end of the Cheese and Wine Route, Bernal [7] sits beneath the world’s highest monolith – La Peña de Bernal.
If your looking to shoot a Mexican movie, Bernal is your place with it’s sun bleached walls and cobbled streets. Deserted on weekdays it feels like you are wandering an abandoned movie set. Packed on weekends it more resembles a theme park.
