Orchha

29 September 2019

Orchha is 2 hours drive from the Alipura Palace Hotel in the direction of Jhansi. Founded in 1531 it was the capital of the Bundela kings until 1738. A series of magnificent 16th and 17th century palaces, cenotaphs and temples suddenly appeared as we approached; each one demanding a stop for photos.

Still vivid after 500 years frescoes in the Raja Mahal illustrate the creation, according to Hindu beliefs
One of 14 “Chatries” (memorials to the rulers of Orchha from the 17th and 18th centuries)
Natural dyes for sale at Orchha market
We bought sweets from this man – delicious but incredibly sweet
Langurs are being trained as “bouncers” to get rid of the vicious marques monkeys
The day before we arrived a tourist was attacked by monkeys at the Taj Mahal
