Designed to discover the varying terrain, history, culture, food, and local communities across Sri Lanka by foot, the Pekoe Trail is a 300+km walking trail traversing the central highlands of Sri Lanka
Pekoe Trail founder Miguel Cunat, Spaniard and long-time Sri Lanka resident: “My initial objective was to promote Sri Lanka as a world-class hiking destination.” His efforts came to fruition with the official opening of the Pekoe Trail in late 2023.
Ever since we’ve been keen to go hike there. We planned on January 2006, the dry(er) season. We’d been in Sri Lanka before in 2013 (here).
Cyclone Ditwah landed in December 2025, unleashing a wave of flooding and landslides across the country, submerging entire towns and severely damaging the Pekoe Trail. The death toll climbed past 350, hundreds were missing and tens of thousands of people were displaced.
Now most of the trail has been restored.
Distances and ascent/descent: I recorded each day’s tracks on a Garmin 245M watch and uploaded to Wikiloc. I’ve used the distances and ascent/descent from Wikiloc although there is some discrepancy from the “official” tracks. The times include stops and breaks.
